Science and technology futures

Here are a couple of sites that might be of interest to some of you technology watchers.

  • X2 – I really like this one. “The purpose of X2 is to identify future disruptions, opportunities, and competitive landscapes related to the content and dynamics of global science and technology innovation; to develop a new platform for understanding global innovation trends; and to present this information to policy- and decision-makers, as well as the general public, in a useful form. The project conducts its research online, through an innovative experiment in open forecasting; in workshops with young scientists and engineers around the world; and in online games.”

“X2 is overseen by an ad hoc committee sponsored by the U.S. National Academies (comprised of the National Academy of Science, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council), and received its initial funding from the U.S. Department of Defense.”

  • PPX – from Popular Science magazine, “…the first place to bet on the future of science and technology. It’s easy and free: Log on, and we’ll give you POP$250,000 in our virtual PopSci Dollars. Use that money to buy propositions you think are likely to happen. If other traders also want to buy, that proposition’s price will go up, and you’ll make PopSci bucks. Expand your portfolio with bets on energy, space, consumer technology and extreme science, and compete against other players for prizes and bragging rights.”

If you’re using any other sites to track tech surprise indicators, please tell me about it.
